Are anthuriums and other aroids toxic to cats and dogs?

This is a fairly common question that comes up as many aroid and anthurium lovers are also pet lovers.  The short answer is yes, anthuriums and other aroids are toxic to pets.  The toxicity is due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystal present in all parts of these plants.  While this does not have systemic toxicity (meaning its not absorbed and transmitted throughout the body in the bloodstream), it can cause significant localized irritation and inflammation in and around the mouth and within the GI tract which will vary based on the size of the animal and the amount ingested.  Symptoms can range from very mild irritation in and around the mouth to GI upset, vomiting or rarely issues with breathing.  It's always best to contact a veterinary professional if the pet consumes a large or unknown amount or is showing more than minor symptoms.
